Krolczyk, Lange finish short of state

Margaret Krolczyk and Hannah Lange may have had a home-course advantage, but it wasn’t nearly enough against a loaded field.

At Tuesday’s WIAA Division 1 girls golf sectional meet hosted by Fond du Lac at Rolling Meadows Golf Course, Krolczyk and Lange needed more than a simple familiarity of the greens and fairways to overcome their competition.

Krolczyk shot 90 and Lange carded a 97, but neither score was good enough to advance to next week’s state meet at University Ridge in Madison.

“Both of the girls played their best out there,” Fond du Lac coach Patti Pelischek said. “They gave me 110 percent. Score-wise, I was thinking that in order to go on, they were going to need to be below 85. Since the day turned out as nice as it did, that 85 was on the high end. In that respect, it’s a little disappointing that we couldn’t be closer to that number, but Margaret will be back next year and I’m very proud of Hannah.” Krolczyk finished in 25th place, while Lange ended up 38th.

The top two teams at sectionals advance to state, while the top three individuals not on a state-qualifying squad also move on. With sunny conditions, temperatures reaching near 70 degrees and little wind to speak of, Tuesday’s meet was about as good as it gets when it comes to Wisconsin weather in early October. The result was low scores nearly across the board, making it even tougher on Krolczyk and Lange.

Hartland Arrowhead finished first as a team, shooting an impressive 301, while Mequon Homestead earned the other spot at state with a 325. Hartford Union finished third with a 328, while Kettle Moraine and Oshkosh West tied for fourth, both shooting 337.

Arrowhead freshman Emily Lauterbach earned medalist honors, shooting even-par 72, while Claire Lauterbach of Arrowhead was just behind her with a 73. Oshkosh West’s Jordann Handy and Hartford Union’s Chloe Volden and Amy Holzer qualified for state as individuals.

Krolczyk, a sophomore, shot 47 on the front nine before bouncing back with a 43 on the back nine. Although she was still 12 strokes away from qualifying for state, Tuesday’s meet was a good building block for her. Now she’s just looking to perform more consistently. “I think I was stronger in the beginning (of the season),” Krolczyk said. “My game deteriorated a little bit. But next year I’ll work on my irons and cleaning up the little things that gave me extra strokes.”

For the senior Lange, Tuesday’s meet may have been a disappointing end to her high school golf career, but she’s happy with how the year progressed. “I’m kind of disappointed with how I did today, but it was a good season,” she said. “I’m glad how it all turned out. … I think I became more patient and started to understand the game more.”

Team scores: Hartland Arrowhead 301, Mequon Homestead 325, Hartford Union 328, Kettle Moraine 337, Oshkosh West 337, Sheboygan North/South 382, West Bend West/East 386, Oconomowoc 405.

Lange, Krolczyk qualify for sectionals

OSHKOSH – The Fond du Lac girls golf team was only a couple of strokes away from advancing to next week’s sectional meet. While unfortunately for the Cardinals, sectionals won’t be happening, two Fond du Lac golfers will be making appearances.

Senior Hannah Lange and sophomore Margaret Krolczyk both shot 94 to finish in a tie for 11th place at Wednesday’s WIAA Division 1 regional meet at Oshkosh Country Club hosted by Oshkosh West, advancing to sectionals next week as individual qualifiers. Lange and Krolczyk were among the top four individuals that weren’t on sectional-qualifying teams. The top four teams advance to sectionals.

“I thought we didn’t play our best but I’m happy we’re still moving on to sectionals,” Lange said of her and Krolczyk. “It’s a hard course. My drives weren’t the best today but we still managed to go.”

Fond du Lac finished fifth as a team, shooting 394, to just miss advancing. Sheboygan North/South shot 392 to take the fourth and final qualifying spot. Hartford Union won the meet, shooting 341. Oshkosh West and West Bend West/East shot 361 and 379, respectively. Hartford Union’s Amy Holzer shot 77 to earn medalist honors.

Tuesday’s Division 1 sectional meet will take place at Rolling Meadows Golf Course in Fond du Lac.

Fond du Lac team aims high under new coach

The Fond du Lac girls golf team will be filled with familiar faces in 2015. But the coaching position won’t be one of them.

Paula Suemnicht resigned in the week leading up to the start of the season to take a job in the Green Bay area and was replaced by Patti Pelischek, who’s coached the Campbellsport boys golf team for the past two decades. In her first week on the job, Pelischek is happy with how the team has responded to a new coach. “It’s been going pretty well,” Pelischek said. “The girls are receptive. … It will be OK. It’s going to be a good experience. The girls want to work hard, they’re trying very, very hard. We have a good nucleus of girls that I think will do well.” Luckily for Pelischek, she won’t be dealing with an inexperienced group.

Senior and fourth-year varsity player Madeline Krolczyk leads the returning Cardinals, while seniors Hannah Lange and Ashley Anderson also return. Junior Cassidy Kahl is also back, as is Margaret Krolczyk — a sophomore who was an honorable mention on the all-Fox Valley Association team in 2014. Sydney George will also be on this year’s team.

“The seniors are definitely going to be the leaders,” Pelischek said. “They’ve been really helpful in making the transition. They’re really helping me a lot, which I really appreciate. I think Margaret and Cassidy as underclassmen will do really well.”

But the Cardinals do lose three graduated seniors from last year, including two-time first team all-Fox Valley Association performer Shania Schibbelhut. Schibbelhut was sixth in the regional tournament last year in leading Fond du Lac to a second-place finish as a team and a berth to sectionals. Even with the loss of player of Schibbelhut’s caliber, Pelischek and the Cardinals still have high hopes for the 2015 season. “In talking to the girls, they kind of seem to think that returning to sectionals as a team is a definite possibility,” Pelischek said. “They also seem to think that they should be in the top half of the conference.”

Pelischek did note that participation numbers are relatively low for the team this year and encouraged any students on the fence about playing golf to contact her or the Fond du Lac High School athletic department as there’s still time to join the squad.

The Cardinals officially begin their season on Tuesday when they head to Wisconsin Dells for a two-day invitational. “They’ve all got great attitudes and they’re willing to work hard,” Pelischek said. “They’re trying their best and they’re anxious for the season to start. Their first meet is a 36-hole invite over in the Dells, so it will be a good indicator as to how they stack up against some of the competition over there.”
