WIAA Regionals – Fond du Lac falls to Sheboygan North
The Fond du Lac girls volleyball team had its chances on Thursday night. Leading 2-0 in their WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal match against No. 9 seed Sheboygan North, the eighth-seeded Cardinals were in position to earn a sweep and keep their season alive.
Instead, Fond du Lac blew leads in the third, fourth and fifth sets en route to a disappointing 3-2 (25-16, 26-24, 23-25, 22-25, 12-15) defeat to the Golden Raiders — ending its season in the first round of the playoffs. “They earned points, we didn’t,” Fond du Lac coach Kevin Santry said of Sheboygan North. “They came in and they fought and they kept fighting. We didn’t have that fight.”
Leading 12-6 in the fifth set, the Cardinals completely collapsed down the stretch — allowing nine straight points to Sheboygan North and giving the Raiders the win.
Mollie Tennessen led Fond du Lac with 12 kills and Emily Thompson had 21 assists. Megan Wendt chipped in with 27 digs and four aces. Lauren Wirtz added 20 digs.
Leading 2-0 after a dramatic 26-24 win in the second set, the Cardinals blew a 17-14 lead in the third to allow Sheboygan North to stay alive and then gave up a 20-17 lead in the fourth. Meanwhile, with its comeback, Sheboygan North will travel to face top-seeded Cedarburg in a regional final match on Saturday.
Although it was a disappointing end, Santry was happy with what his team accomplished and how hard it worked in 2015. “The girls worked hard,” he said. “They worked harder than any other team that I’ve been affiliated with. We’ve asked a lot of them and they responded well. They should be proud of all the things we accomplished this year.”

Mollie Tennessen & Fondy Team defeats Oshkosh North
The Fond du Lac girls volleyball team picked up a strong Fox Valley Association victory over Oshkosh North on Thursday, winning in straight sets 25-12, 25-23, 25-17.
One of the standouts for the Cardinals was senior hitter Mollie Tennessen, who had 11 digs and two blocks on the night.
The Reporter caught up with Tennessen after Thursday’s match to talk about the Cardinals’ victory.
The Reporter: Mollie, the team picked up a nice win tonight over Oshkosh North. Talk a little bit about tonight’s win.
Mollie Tennessen: We started off a little slow, but then we got in a rhythm and really wanted to protect our home court, so we did well.
TR: In the second set, you were down late and come back to win 25-23. How much momentum did that give the team to take a two-set lead?
MT: We really wanted it that bad, so we kept fighting for it and we finally got the victory in the second set.
TR: Personally, you had 11 digs and two blocks night. What was working well for you?
MT: I was here to win, played my heart out and I guess it went well for me.
TR: The team is out to a pretty good start this season. What’s been key to the team’s success so far?
MT: We’ve all got along well, we know what the game plan and is and we just go with the flow.
TR: You guys had an ugly loss to Oshkosh West last week. How big was it for the team to respond after a game like that?
MT: We really needed it so we can go forward in our season. We didn’t like what we had last week, but now that we’ve got this victory under our belt we can keep chugging forward.
TR: The team has only three seniors this year, including yourself. Talk a little about the makeup of the Cardinals this year.
MT: We do have a lot of youth this year, but we play all summer together so we’ve been playing for a couple months together now. We just gelled throughout the summer so that helped us a lot.
TR: The FVA is a tough league. What are your goals within the conference this year?
MT: We want to do the best we can and hopefully get more wins that we did last year. We want to improve our record and see how far we can actually go.
TR: What are some of your individual goals this season?
MT: I want to play as hard as I can get my stats up from previous years.
TR: As a rightside hitter, describe your strengths as a volleyball player.
MT: I have a high vertical so I’m able to block most balls if I’m in the right spot.
TR: Any other thoughts you wanted to mention?
MT: I just hope for the best for my team and we’re going to keep going.
Coach Kevin Santry’s thoughts on Mollie: She’s a leader and a captain. She does a lot of great things. There was a ball 20 feet from Mollie and she’s diving on the floor. There’s no way she was getting that ball, but she was putting her body out there and I said that’s the spirit of what we want to embody, especially on our home court. I think the girls reacted to that. Physically, she’s very gifted. She’s an amazing student-athlete and I wish I could have more like her. She’s a special athlete.
