Fond du Lac boys hockey to rely on youth

After taking fourth place in the Badgerland Conference last season, including finishing second in the league tournament, the Fond du Lac boys hockey team will need to replace some key pieces in 2016-17.

En route to a 12-12-1 record last year, the Cardinals received major contributions from Caylen Dyni (36 points), Noah Wilson (25), Joseph Voight (9) and standout goaltender William Shober (2.57 goals-against average, .903 save percentage).

Dyni, Wilson and Shober were All-Badgerland Conference honorees and honorable mentions on the Wisconsin Hockey Coaches Assocation all-state team.

All of those players are now gone.

Fond du Lac coach Ryan Sarazin knows it will be difficult to replace that kind of talent but is hoping an influx of youth can bring the Cardinals back to an elite level.

“The Cardinals are looking to take the next step on their way back to State of Wisconsin dominance and this young group can be the ones to do just that,” Fond du Lac coach Ryan Sarazin said. “It will be a tough task to replace nine seniors from last year’s team, but the Cardinals bring in a unique balance of veteran players with a young group of talent the youth programs and the Cardinals JV teams have produced the past few years.”

The loss of Shober in goal will possibly be Fond du Lac’s biggest obstacle, but Sarazin is optimistic his replacement can step in seamlessly.

“In the goal, the Cardinals will need to replace three-year starting goaltender William Shober and stepping in will be junior TJ Draves,” Sarazin said. “TJ has had some solid performances at the JV level and will be looked upon to lock down the goal. Mark Kedinger will also make a position change into the goal and add support at the position.”

Defensively, Fond du Lac will rely on seniors Thomas O’Leary and Adam Grimm to lead the charge, while juniors Zach Schmitt and transfer Zachary Wilson should play significant roles as well.

With the loss of so much scoring punch from a season ago, the Cardinals will need returners like Henry Lange (26 points), Ryan Sabel (22), Dayne Hefter (9) and Kolton Sabel to step up on offense.

Losing to Mequon Homestead 4-3 in the regional final round of the WIAA playoffs last year, it was disappointing way for the Cardinals to end a promising season.

Sarazin is hoping this year will have a different outcome.

“The Cardinals will be young and starting new players in key positions, but this team will grow and have success by the end of the year with expectations, as always, to compete for a state title appearance,” he said.
