Fond du Lac softball picks up pair of wins

It hasn’t been an easy start to the spring for the Fond du Lac softball team. The Cardinals began their 2016 campaign with blowout losses to Fox Valley Association foes Oshkosh North and Kaukauna and fell in a competitive game to Appleton East on Friday night.

Even when Fond du Lac was ahead late in the second game of Friday’s doubleheader against the Patriots, the Cards couldn’t catch a break, as the contest was suspended due to darkness. On Saturday, Fond du Lac finally got into the winning column.

Andra O’Brien earned two wins in the circle and the Cardinals had few problems at the plate as they won two of three games at their home invite — defeating West Bend East 6-4 and Port Washington 9-1. Fond du Lac fell 14-11 to West Bend West in the other game. “It’s great going into the next couple of weeks,” O’Brien said of the victories. “We’ll try to keep this momentum going. We’ve been doing really well as a team, talking a lot more. Hopefully we can keep it up.”

Fond du Lac (2-4) began the day with a victory over West Bend East, scoring two runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings to come away with the win. The Suns actually led 3-2 entering the latter part of the game before the Cardinals rallied.

The second game of the tournament against West Bend West was a slugfest, as the Spartans scored five runs in both the second and fourth innings.

Fond du Lac had initially taken the lead with a three-run first inning, and added four runs each in the third and fourth innings, but couldn’t keep up.

In the final game of the day, the Cardinals jumped on Port Washington early and never let up. Powered by a two-run single from O’Brien and an RBI triple from Crystal Koch, Fond du Lac took a 3-0 lead after the first inning. The Cardinals added a couple more runs in the third and two more in the fourth on Kali Smit’s two-run single. Aleigha Mitchell chipped in with an RBI double in the fifth and Devin Wonser added an RBI triple in the sixth.

For her part, O’Brien allowed only the one run, which didn’t come until the seventh, and three hits. “The past couple days I’ve just really been feeling it,” O’Brien said. “I’ve just been trying to hit my spots the best I can and do the best I can for the team. The team has been great getting the outs and keeping it easy for me.”

Meanwhile, Koch had a tremendous day at the plate, with a triple and a pair of doubles. She reached based in 8 of her 10 plate appearances. “I feel like I’ve had to do my duty to get everyone moving and start the inning off when we weren’t doing so hot,” Koch said.

The Cardinals move back into FVA play on Tuesday against Neenah and Koch hopes the team’s success on Saturday will carry over. “I think it’s going to keep our motivation up for the rest of the season,” she said.

Fond du Lac falls in softball season opener

OSHKOSH – Being outside was a refreshing change for the Fond du Lac softball team. It would have been even better if things had gone a little smoother for the Cardinals.

Fond du Lac committed four errors, which led to some early runs for Oshkosh North, as the Cardinals dropped their season-opener, 20-4, in a five-inning contest that finished up in the rain, sleet and snow of the Wisconsin spring. “This is our first time outside since the season started and we did a lot of things to beat ourselves,” Cardinals’ head coach Julie Ziegler said. “Something here, something there and we make a play and don’t make an error and it’s a lot closer.”

A pair of errors in the bottom of the first inning by the Cardinals helped the Spartans take a 5-0 lead, while Fond du Lac had another pair of miscues in North’s seven-run second-inning. Fond du Lac also had a pair of runners thrown out trying to take an extra base on hits, one at home and another at second base. “Those are the things we have to work on throughout the season,” Ziegler said. “We have a ways to go.”

Despite falling behind 5-0 after the first inning, the Cardinals came back in the top of the second and got the offense going. Aleigha Mitchell opened the inning with a single and was bunted to second by Michaela Schneider. After Crystal Koch reached on an error and stole second, Kellie Hierl delivered a two-run single that cut the Spartans’ lead to 5-2.

Kellie Hierl, a freshman, finished 2-for-2 and drove in all four runs for the Cardinals, adding a two-run triple in the fourth inning. “She does a good job. She works hard and does what she needs to do,” Ziegler said of Hierl. “She’s a competitor and we’re looking for good things from her.”

Aleigha Mitchell also finished with a pair of hits in the game for the Cardinals.

Andra O’Brien walked three and struck out three in four innings in the loss for Fond du Lac, which is scheduled to host Appleton North on Thursday.
