Fondy aims for top of FVA

After last year’s second-place finish to Neenah in the Fox Valley Association, Fond du Lac boys tennis coach Joe Sagen is confident his squad can compete for a conference title. “To me, it’s between Neenah and us for the conference,” Sagen said. “If we have a chance to beat Neenah, it’s this year.”

Senior Matt Riley, who placed third at the WIAA Division 1 state tournament last year as member of the No. 1 doubles team, returns as the No. 1 singles player for the Cardinals.

Sagen believes Riley will be one of the conference’s top athletes. “I’m hoping for him to return to state,” Sagen said, “He’s been working like a dog. He’s a court rat. He’s been out there four days a week, if not more. Summertime, same thing. He’s just an animal with the game.”

Matt Schneider, a senior, returns for Fondy as well and will be one half of the No. 1 doubles team. Matt Tentler, Felix Cloutier and Drew Jorgensen will battle for the No. 2 singles spot, with one of them likely to end up as Schneider’s partner along the way.

Juniors Kyle Leisses, Moosa Syed, and Jason Wang also return for the Cardinals, who Sagen said are “that much better than we were last year.” “We’re another year older, another year more experienced, another year more mature, another year stronger,” Sagen remarked.
