Fond du Lac prepares for season

Once again, the Fond du Lac girls soccer team is young. But unlike last year, many of the youthful Cardinals on this season’s squad have significant varsity experience.

That has Fond du Lac coach Brandon Petersen optimistic heading into the soccer season. “We want to be fighting for the top three (in the Fox Valley Association) with Neenah, Kimberly and Appleton North,” Petersen said. “I think we do have a shot, but the other teams are going to be strong as well. Breaking into that top three is going to be difficult. But the girls are definitely up for the challenge.”

In going 11-8-5 last season, the Cardinals finished in fourth place in the FVA. However, Fond du Lac does lose much of its defense, including Maddison Te Stroete, last year’s Action Reporter Media All-Area Girls Soccer Player of the Year. “Defense will be an interesting trial by fire,” Petersen said. “We’ll see who fits where. We have a lot of players who have experience in the defense, just not a ton of time.”

All-FVA honorable mentions Hailey Ahrens and Zoe Pantel return, and Petersen mentioned them as being particularly important to the Cardinals’ offensive attack. “Those are going to be the two key players, especially with our attack,” Petersen said. “Both are either in attacking midfield or at the striker position. We have a lot of youth coming back. All but one (player) in our attack is a returning starter.”

Mollie Tennessen returns in goal for Fond du Lac, and Petersen also expects big things from Becky McArdle.

Playing in the ultra-tough FVA, Petersen and the Cardinals know there will be bumps in the road, but are hoping to come together as a team and play their best when it matters most. “We want to put ourselves in a position to make a run at the end,” he said. “The conference is going to to be tough. … It will be interesting because anybody can beat anybody in our conference at any point. Can we put it together at the right time?”
