Kiernan Koepke leading way for Cardinals

Kiernan Koepke came within inches of qualifying for the WIAA state cross country meet last year — literally.

Koepke finished eight-tenths of a second out of the final individual qualifying spot at the Oshkosh North sectional meet, placing 10th overall. He has returned this year as the No. 1 runner for Fond du Lac and had a strong showing at the Bay Port Invitational recently where he took second overall.

What is something that most people don’t know about you? Even though I’m one of the better runners in the school, I do have asthma.

What is your most memorable sports achievement? Last year in cross country, where I almost made it to state. It was kind of a shame, but it honestly did feel good to (finish) that well.

What is your most embarrassing sports memory? My freshman year, my first race.

Do you have any superstitions or pre-race rituals? I continue to say the similar things over in my head before a race. Things like it doesn’t matter how I feel or it doesn’t matter what I think, I’m going to do good.

Why are sports important to you? I kind of wanted to be active and my brother (Bryton) actually got me into cross country. And I’m happy he got me into it.

What is your dream vacation? I’d like to go back down to Arizona and see some of my family I have down there again.

What is your dream career? I’m planning on trying to be a teacher.

Sport: Cross country.

Pro/college athlete: Jesse Owens

Movie: Any Harry Potter movie. There are some that I don’t like as much, but I really couldn’t pick a favorite.

Meal: My grandma’s lasagna

Musical artist or group: That just depends on what I’m listening to.

Class: Leadership was quite fun.

Hobby: I like reading, but my grandpa got me into collecting coins, collecting stamps, and I actually collect dragon statues.
