Fond du Lac has renewed approach under first-year coach Nick Ford

The emphasis first-year coach Nick Ford puts on offseason training and defense is new to Fond du Lac junior Mack Sebert. Ford comes to Fondy, his alma mater, after serving as an assistant coach at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri. He also coached in Wisconsin at his alma mater, NAIA school Cardinal Stritch University. He adopted his defense-first mentality from the coaches he has played and coached under. The Cardinals were outscored 71.5 to 52.1 in points per game last season, went 2-22 overall and winless in the Fox Valley Association. Ford is trying to turn the page to a different chapter in Fondy basketball. “We really bought in this summer,” Sebert said. “We had a lot of guys in the gym. I’m really excited about coach Ford. He’s been drilling us every morning. It’s going to be a great season. We’re going to shock a lot of people this year.” Sebert was Fondy’s leading scorer and rebounder last season with 10-point and 4.7-rebound averages, respectively. Sebert believes playing AAU ball this summer helped him and he’s excited to display his improved outside shot and post game.

Junior guard Henry Wright also liked that the team’s offseason was different than it has been in the past. “We got in here every day and ran a lot, lifted a lot, which we haven’t done a lot in the past,” Wright said. “Our coach has done a great job of establishing leadership and getting in the gym to be more of a habit.” Wright averaged 6.5 points last season and shot 32-of-76 on 3-pointers, a 42.1% clip. Ford said Wright gives the team an attitude and personality with his fiery mentality.

“Every team that I’ve been a part of that’s been good you need talent, no question, but those intangibles of things we’ve been missing in the past, we’re really building those every single day,” Ford said. “Our guys are buying into it. At some point we’re really going to click and win a bunch of games.” The Cardinals will run more four men out, one man in on offense. Alex Rusch played half of last season on junior varsity and will have an increased role, Ford said.
