Young Fondy girls get a big taste of FVA basketball in loss to Appleton North

Entering the season, four of the seven biggest contributors for the Fond du Lac girls basketball team had zero to minimum varsity experience. Freshman Sophia Langille is the most instrumental of the new varsity players. She’s running point guard for Fondy, so the ball is going through her hands nearly every play she’s on the floor.

Fellow freshmen Rachel Zimmerman and Hallie Treptow and junior Morgan Wallendal are also new to big varsity roles. Wallendal attempted just 16 shots and appeared in 12 varsity games last season.

They’ll play a big part in the trajectory of Fondy’s season and got an intense sample of Fox Valley Association basketball Friday night against Appleton North. The Cardinals trailed Appleton North by as many as 23 points in the first half but fought back to cut their deficit to 10 in the second half. Appleton North was the bigger, more experienced team and coasted to a 71-50 win.

“I was overwhelmed with all the pressure,” Langille said. During a 14-1 Appleton North run, she turned over the ball with an off-target pass. Afterward, Fondy coach Jeff Bell told her to swing the ball so that her teammate could safely get the ball to the player Langille tried to pass to. Her and the rest of the team’s nerves dropped coming out after halftime. Fondy opened the second half on a 13-2 run and cut the deficit to 10 points. “I had a few turnovers, but then I kept on adjusting and we got better,” Langille said. “It’s a process. We’re not going to be perfect at first. We’re getting better every day.”

Langille finished with 10 points and averages 8.7 points per game. Joslyn Herbeck led Fondy with 14 points, and Nyah Oderick added eight. “That was the first real FVA pressure that we’ve been trying our best to give them a feel in practice, but you don’t know until you get it,” Bell said. “You could tell in that first half that the pressure really impacted us offensively. I think that was the biggest factor for us in that first half. Then we kind of calmed down in the second half offensively. We got some shots to drop, realized that the pressure wasn’t as intense as we thought it was.”

Herbeck and Breanna Miller are Fondy’s captains and have taken Langille under their wings. They’re confident in the young guard, and Bell said it helps her development. “They really take on that role of (telling Langille) ‘you’ve got the next one’ and staying after and shooting with her,” Bell said. “In the summer, (they) developed a great relationship. The others as well.”

Langille’s toughest adjustment moving from middle school ball to varsity is that teams have scouting reports. Entering games, they already know how they’ll try to expose her weaknesses and take away her strengths. “Tonight she made more passes on her feet than in the air, and that was a big change for her,” Bell said. “She doesn’t make a ton of freshman mistakes. She does a good job of adjusting, not letting it get to her and rolling onto the next play. She’s going to get better as the season goes on.”
