Carlson twins, big in talent and leadership, short in stature, are leading Fond du Lac hockey

What happens when two peas in a pod aggravate one another? You get the Carlson twins. The Fond du Lac boys hockey twins, Cole and Caden Carlson, are the brothers that fight every time the teacher turns their head. All the close hours spent, regardless if many of them are bickering, make an in-sync duo on the ice.

The senior captains have the type of chemistry where they know where the other one is at and what they want to do without seeing it. They first played hockey when they were 2 and have played on the same teams since. Their chemistry, leadership and experience has accounted for 34 of 75 Fond du Lac goals scored as of Friday. They’re the primary reason why the Cardinals are fighting for the top spot in the Badgerland Conference at 4-1. Caden is first in scoring for Fond du Lac and Cole is third. Cole leads in assists and Caden is second. “We’ve been playing so long together that we kind of know where each other are,” Cole said. “We play the same way, so if he’s in one spot I know where he’s going to be at in the next spot.”

Caden broke the Fond du Lac single-game goals scored record with eight on the road against Oshkosh on Tuesday during a 12-0 win. Their twin connection was on display as Cole assisted Caden on three goals. “Part of it might be they have that little twin thing going on where they just know where each other is at,” Fond du Lac coach Ryan Sarazin said. “I can’t explain it even, but there’s just something going on there. They do a nice job. They’ve done some things with the puck, creatively, that is very rare to see.” Caden said nothing was unusual on that game day, noting that he worked out, and credited good help from his team. He scored three times in both the first and second periods and twice in the third.

Senior Max Erstad, a teammate and friends of the Carlson twins since 9 years old, said Caden simply doesn’t miss when he’s got a good chance. “He was kind of shocked. He acted like he didn’t want to smile, but we knew he wanted to smile and be a little happy that he got that record,” Erstad said.

Caden broke his assistant coach Kent Ellingson’s record of six goals. It was cool for Ellingson to see his record fall in-person during his first season with the Cardinals. “Really happy for him to be able to come up and pump out eight goals, beat a record that stood for what, since ’89,” Ellingson said. “It’s pretty neat to be here to witness it and see it broken.” The sideline was chattering about Caden nearing the milestone, and Ellingson jokingly pulled Caden back when he asked to re-enter the game. “I was tripping a little bit so I could get out there to try beating it,” Caden said.

Sarazin saw it coming in the first period when Fond du Lac built a 6-0 lead. He said the puck was bouncing Caden’s way because of what he does in practice — always give 100% effort, along with his brother. “I think that’s partially him and Cole, that’s due to their work ethic,” Sarazin said. “You create your chances by putting yourselves in the right places on the rink. Their work ethic, making sure you’re going to the net and doing things like that. A few bounced off him … The last one was a bar down. I mean, that’s a goal anywhere.” They may argue on some things, but they agree that their work ethics are top notch and their chemistry is undeniable. They mostly refer to preparation when discussing their personal and team success. The self-described hard-workers’ father played hockey for Fond du Lac not long before Sarazin joined the staff as an assistant.

“My dad just pushed us to be better hockey players, and we’ve always had a good work ethic,” Caden said. “That led us the way pretty much.” Coaching the twins has been enjoyable for Sarazin. What makes him the proudest and most excited is how they carry themselves outside of games. He marvels at the Carslon twins’ leadership and command they have of the team. “We have a solid team this year. What you see is a product of those things that they do,” Sarazin said. “They make sure that everybody is working out all June and July. We skate all summer. The work starts there, and they organize all those things. That’s what’s been good to see. It’s not just seeing them doing good in games. They’re out there. They’ve done it. They’ve taken that leadership role through summer (and) fall in captain practices.” Caden said he, Cole and the seniors have been teaching the younger players to ensure another good team next season after they graduate.

Sarazin had questions when he inherited the Carlson twins from the youth programs. Do they want to play together? Do they not want to play together? “I find mostly, they might not admit it, but they do have a nice action, they share the puck with each other,” Sarazin said. “It’s been interesting learning that, having that twin dynamic on the team. It’s been fun.”

Ellingson has known them for about 10 years because his son played against the twins when they were in youth leagues. He said it’s great to see the grown men Cole and Caden have become. “They have that relationship where they’ll go at each other quite a bit, yelling at each other, swearing at each other,” Ellingson said. “But it’s neat to see. I’ve never worked with twins like that. It’s a cool relationship that they have. Very good kids.”

Cole and Caden see the chemistry like everyone else and aren’t stubborn enough to be unappreciative of what they’ve done together. “It’s been pretty cool,” Caden said. “We normally are along the same line, so we normally get some stuff done. It’s nice.”

At 5-foot-5, the twins are the shortest players on the roster, but they’ve always had it that way. Their quickness and scoring ability motivates their teammates to try to score with them.m“I’ve known them since they were this tall,” Sarazin said, holding his hand below his waist. “They were in Mites. Just watching them on the rink. We’re in tune with the youth program, so we know what’s going on. They’re not the biggest guys around, but we were like, ‘Who are these kids scooting around everybody? The can handle the puck.’ “

Fond du Lac has scored 14 short-handed goals as of Friday, and the Carlson twins scored half of them and own half the assists. Sarazin has never seen so many short-handed goals in one season and said the things the twins do are “rare.” He’s seen a change in the sport that benefits the twins. “You don’t have to be 6-foot-10 anymore,” Sarazin said. “If you can move the puck like they do and you can put it in the net like they do, then there’ll be a place for you to play.”

Next for the Carlsons after this season is Junior A hockey, an intermediary between high school and college. Sarazin compared it to junior college for football players. They’ve been in contact with several teams. “You’re just kind of growing in yourself. You live away from home, you’re playing in an elite league,” Sarazin said. “They’ll continue to talk to colleges and get recruited out of that league. There’s already been multiple calls on them. We just have to get them to their junior level and hopefully continue to get them a look in college. I suspect they’ll get there, whether it’s at the Division I or Division III level.” Their focus now is to finish the conference slate strong with a win over first place and 5-0 Neenah/Hortonville/Menasha on Tuesday. When asked what else should be known about the team’s season, Cole said, “Hopefully you’ll know in a few months if we’ll be making it to state.”

The “Cowan Cup” should be competed for by only two teams the Fond du Lac Cardinals boys’ varsity hockey team or the Waupun Warriors boys’ varsity hockey team. Awarded to the winning team on an annual basis to start January 2011 and continue forth into the future…

“This cup is to honor Mike Cowan for all his accomplishments in promoting and growing the sport of ice hockey statewide, which have changed the landscape of what ice hockey is for all who play prep hockey in Wisconsin. This is the least that we can do to honor his accomplishments forever.”

 ~ Cowan Cup Trustees
