Fondy sweeps Appleton West in FVA matchup

The Fond du Lac girls volleyball team is playing as well as it has all season. With the playoffs just around the corner, it couldn’t have come at a better time. Using a quick start and some late-set heroics, the Cardinals swept Appleton West 3-0 (25-14, 27-25, 25-17) Tuesday night in a Fox Valley Association match played at Fondy — another impressive win after taking first place at a tournament hosted by Janesville Craig last weekend.

“Before the match, we set a challenge to them to continue with what we started on Saturday, with winning that tournament and playing good competition there and then playing a conference match,” Fond du Lac coach Kevin Santry said. “Every conference match is tough, it’s the FVA. Getting the win here and we wanted to continue that going into Hortonville on Thursday. The ball’s rolling a little bit and it looks good.”

Fond du Lac (15-19, 2-5 FVA) started quickly on Tuesday, jumping out to an 8-2 lead in the first set on the strength of a 7-0 serving run by Allison Duley. The Cardinals led by double digits for much of the set as Appleton West (5-17, 0-7 FVA) struggled to play with much consistency. That fast start put momentum on Fondy’s side from the get-go, something that carried over to the rest of the match. It helped a lot,” Fond du Lac outside hitter Jordan Quackenboss said of the team’s start. “It probably got in their heads, which has usually happened to us and we definitely stepped it up.”

The second set proved to be a bit tougher as the Cardinals played sloppily throughout and needed a late rally to pull out the victory. Trailing 18-12 at one point, Fond du Lac chipped away at the lead until it was just 23-22. A Mollie Tennessen kill evened the score and the Cards took a 24-23 lead on a receiving error by the Terrors. The two teams went back and forth until it was knotted up at 25 before Brianna Hubbard had a block kill to give Fondy the lead and Appleton West failed to get the ball over the net on the following serve-receive. Ironically, Santry pointed out that his team had practiced a scenario on Monday in practice where the team was down by significant margin late in the set. He thought that may have played a role in the Cardinals’ comeback. “Oddly enough, we had a challenge set to them yesterday in practice where the score was 12-18 and I put our starters and different players up to that challenge,” Santry said. “It was ironic that it got to that, but the girls responded well to that. They showed the mental toughness and the fortitude you’d want out of a team.” “It definitely boosted our confidence a lot,” Quackenboss said of the team’s comeback.

In the third set, the Cardinals took a 4-0 lead right off the bat and never trailed. The Terrors were able to keep it relatively close for the first half of the set, but the Cardinals pulled away, taking an 11-point edge late. Appleton West responded with a mini-run to make things interesting toward the end, but Fondy closed it out for the sweep. Lauren Wirtz led the Cardinals with 15 digs on the night, while Duley added 14 assists and seven aces. Megan Krupp had six kills and five digs, while Jordan Quackenboss chipped in with five kills and four blocks.

Heading into a road match at Hortonville on Thursday before traveling to a tournament in Lodi on Saturday, Fond du Lac has only a few more opportunities to work out the kinks before the start of the postseason. Tuesday’s win helped with that while also giving the Cards confidence moving forward. “It shows we can compete,” Fond du Lac libero Lauren Wirtz said.

Fond du Lac def. Appleton West, 25-14, 27-25, 25-17.

Stat Leaders: FDL — Lauren Wirtz, 15 digs; Allison Duley, 14 assists, 7 aces; Megan Krupp, 6 kills, 5 digs; Jordan Quackenboss, 5 kills, 4 blocks.

Janesville Craig Invitational: The Fond du Lac girls volleyball team went 4-1 on the day, winning the tournament.

The Cardinals opened up with a 25-17, 25-23 loss to Evansville, but responded with four straight wins against Janesville Parker (25-14, 27-25), Whitewater (25-23, 25-14), Janesville Craig (25-22, 25-19) and Slinger (21-25, 25-20, 15-7).

Allison Duley had 43 assists and 11 aces for Fondy, while Emily Thompson added 31 assists and nine aces. Brianna Hubbard had 23 kills and Johannah Georgeson added 18, Lauren Wirtz had 29 digs and Megan Krupp had 7.5 blocks and 22 digs.

“The girls played well together, they came together and it was a total team effort,” Fondy head coach Kevin Santry said. “I”m proud of them and they deserve this.”

Fond du Lac goes 4-3 at UW-O tourney

UW-Oshkosh Invitational: The Fond du Lac girls volleyball team finished 18th out of 32 teams at the UW-Oshkosh High School Showdown, going 4-3 over the span of the two-day tournament.

The Cardinals got out to a bit of a rough start on Friday, going 1-2. Fond du Lac lost to Verona 2-0 (12-25, 15-25) and Cuba City 2-0 (17-25, 12-25), but did manage a win over Cedar Grove-Belgium 2-0 (25-14, 25-13). On Saturday, the Cardinals went 3-1 — defeating Cedar Grove-Belgium 2-0 (25-16, 25-20), Manawa 2-0 (25-12, 25-20), Campbellsport 2-1 (19-25, 25-22, 17-15) and losing to Appleton Xavier 2-0 (11-25, 23-25).

Megan Krupp had a fantastic tournament for the Cardinals, leading the team with 32 kills and 5.5 blocks. Krupp was named first team all-tournament for her efforts. Allison Duley added 52 assists and Allysa Moss had 25 digs. Cece Dardis and Lauren Wirtz both had nine aces, Johannah Georgeson had 23 kills and Malinda Schwantes chipped in with 18 assists. Duley also had 23 digs and Jordan Quackenboss had 4.5 blocks.

Fondy finishes 3-2 in home invite

Things are starting to come together for the Fond du Lac girls volleyball team. After starting the season 1-6, the Cardinals are realizing what it takes to win as a team. With a big sweep over Oshkosh North on Thursday, that momentum carried over into the Fond du Lac Invitational Saturday. The Cardinals finished 3-2 on the day, finishing third overall out of six teams. “It was a great day for us, there were some challenges that we met and overcame, there were some challenges that we didn’t meet, but it’s ammo for practice,” Fond du Lac head coach Kevin Santry said. “Overall it was a good day.”

The first three matches all ended with lopsided results — a 25-22, 25-14 win over Grafton, a 25-21, 25-10 loss to Hartford and a 25-13, 25-11 win over Menasha — but the Cardinals (6-11) saved the excitement for their last two games. In its fourth game against Denmark, Fondy dropped a close 25-21, 25-22 match, but responded with a nice 25-19, 24-26, 15-8 win over Sussex Hamilton in the finale.

“I think that after our win over Oshkosh North Thursday, it brought up our confidence and we played like a team today,” said senior middle hitter Brianna Hubbard. “The two losses we still played well.”

In the final game against Sussex Hamilton, Fondy opened with a win after a back-and-forth battle throughout. Then in the second, Fondy found itself down 16-8 early and 21-13 later on. The Cardinals then went on a 11-2 run, taking a 24-23 before falling 26-24. Despite not coming away with the win, it was the momentum that carried over into the third set that allowed the Cardinals to cruise to a 15-8 game-clinching win. “We talk about momentum and it was looking real bleak there,” Santry said about that second set. “I was scared, but for us to come back and battle and to be tied at 23, it was awesome to watch. The girls understood how important that moment was.” Added senior Allison Duley: “It was a lot of teamwork. We played as a team and we really fought as a team.”

Santry said the Cardinals ran more of an aggressive style offense Saturday, and gave credit to the girls for realizing what it takes to win. “We ran more of an aggressive offense and we ran more of an aggressive defense,” Santry said. “One thing that we have been stressing is that it’s one thing to enjoy the sport and play it, but it’s another thing to play for someone else on the team. You can start seeing that and it’s awesome.” It took about three games for the Cardinals to start to play with a little bit of consistency, after the first three games were not even close. “I think the second game we were just tired and it was hard to compete like we did in the first game,” said Hubbard, who finished with 12 kills and four blocks on the day. “The third game we were just ready to win again and we didn’t give up. We knew that we were going to win.”

Johannah Georgeson led the Cardinals with 13 kills on the day while Lauren Wirtz, who was just moved to libero, had 24 digs. Duley had six aces and 30 assists while Mariah Krzanowski had 4.5 blocks. “We moved Lauren to libero and she played a strong game, also Cece Dardis got her first varsity action and I thougth she played well,” added Santry. “But it was a collective effort with the girls, our wins were team wins and that’s good to see.”

After a slow start, the Cardinals hope this success carries into the second half of the season. They will host Appleton North Tuesday night at 7 p.m. “We are in our improvement stage,” Duley said. “We had a rough start to the season but we are starting to pick it up and play as a team.”

Fond du Lac sweeps Oshkosh North

Fond du Lac 3, Oshkosh North 0: The Fond du Lac girls volleyball team has had its share of struggles to start the 2014 season. That was not the case Thursday night. Using strong all-around play, the Cardinals swept Oshkosh North in a Fox Valley Association match 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-14). Johannah Georgeson led Fond du Lac with eight kills on the night as the Cardinals picked up their first FVA win of the year. “The girls played together,” Fond du Lac coach Kevin Santry said. “It was fun to watch.” Allison Duley added nine assists and Lauren Wirtz chipped in with seven digs. Brianna Hubbard had 2.5 blocks.

Cards struggle in FVA opener

One step forward, two steps back. That was the theme in the Fond du Lac girls volleyball team’s home and Fox Valley Association opener Thursday night at Fond du Lac.For seemingly every smidge of momentum the Cards would grab, they’d give it right back — and more — to Oshkosh West.Oshkosh West grabbed an early lead and took advantage of Fond du Lac mistakes throughout as the Cardinals fell to the Wildcats 3-1 (12-25, 12-25, 25-23, 13-25).

“It’s our girls out-thinking themselves,” Fond du Lac coach Kevin Santry said of his team’s early-match struggles on Thursday. “It’s them taking themselves out mentally. We’ve worked on these types of situations and our youth and figuring out what we need to do to overcome those opportunities. Oshkosh West just played a good game. They’re very well-coached and they executed.” Oshkosh West (7-1, 1-0 FVA) wasted no time taking control of the first set, essentially setting the tone for the rest of the match. Leading 7-4 early on, the Wildcats scored eight straight points with junior Hailey Hendrix serving. The Cardinals never got closer than 10 points the rest of the set. The second set was a similar situation as the Wildcats took an early edge and continued to build as it went on. “Something we talk about is having that confidence and when you can ahead in sets like that, then you just play looser,” Oshkosh West coach Gillian Pakula said. “You play a little bit more aggressive.”

Fond du Lac (2-6, 0-1 FVA) did send a small jolt of excitement through the gym in the third set however, pulling out a 25-23 win. After taking a 20-14 lead, the Cards needed to rally to win the set and extend the match. Trailing 23-21, Fond du Lac scored four straight points to send the match to a fourth set with Mollie Tennessen closing it out with two straight kills. “The girls worked a little bit harder (in the third set),” Santry said. “They came to the realization of the scenario and the environment. … They realized the reality of the situation and they knew that they needed to do their part.” But, as was the case all night, Fond du Lac was unable to capitalize on that momentum. Oshkosh West’s Mira Wallace served 11 straight points to begin the fourth set and the Wildcats cruised from there.

“(Fond du Lac) wanted it more in that third set and we were playing not to lose in that third set,” Pakula said of the message to her team to begin the fourth set. “We have to play to win and focus in on what we’re doing.” Johannah Georgeson led the Cardinals with eight kills on the night, while Megan Krupp added eight digs. Allison Duley had nine assists and three aces, while Jordan Quackenboss chipped in with four kills and Allysa Moss had four digs. Mira Wallace paced the Wildcats with 20 assists and Sienna Kaufmann had nine kills. Rachel Gardner added 11 digs and Ashley Shea and Hendrix both had eight kills. While a loss wasn’t how Santry and the Cardinals hoped to begin the conference season, the team did show some bright spots despite the final score. “I thought our attitude and our mentality was pretty positive throughout the entire match,” “Santry said. “So that shows some heart. Offensively, we’ve been working on taking shots and not hitting it to certain zones and we executed that well. When you have a match like this, it seems like there’s a lot wrong and when I dissect film and there’s little things and once we get those little things fixed, we’ll be fine.”

Oshkosh West def. Fond du Lac, 25-12, 25-12, 23-25, 25-13.

Stat Leaders: Fond du Lac — Megan Krupp, 8 digs; Johannah Georgeson, 8 kills; Allison Duley, 9 assists. Oshkosh West — Mira Wallace, 20 assists; Sienna Kaufmann, 9 kills; Ashley Shea, 8 kills; Rachel Gardner, 11 digs.
