Corbin finishes 16th at state

MADISON – Fond du Lac junior Maddy Corbin finished 16th in the WIAA Division 1 state diving competition, held Saturday morning at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium on the campus of UW-Madison.

Corbin finished with a finals score of 363.20. Neenah’s Hazel Hertting won the Division 1 state title with a score of 576.45.

Corbin advanced to the final 16 after moving through the preliminary and semifinal rounds. In the preliminaries, Corbin scored a 173.10 to finish 17th out of 24 divers. In the semifinals, she scored a 271.15 to finish 15th out of 20 and advance to the finals.

Corbin ready for state

Years of gymnastics practice is paying off for Maddy Corbin in ways she probably never expected. Yet as the Fond du Lac junior gets ready for the WIAA Division 1 state swimming & diving meet this Saturday, it’s the life she formerly lived that’s a key proponent behind her current one. Corbin is the lone Cardinal headed to the University of Wisconsin Natatorium this weekend, qualifying for state in the diving competition after finishing fourth at sectionals last Friday. Her score of 412.25 set a Fond du Lac school record, breaking the school record she had previously set.

Impressive, but even more so when considering the fact that Corbin didn’t take up diving until about a year ago. At the urging of former Fond du Lac Swim Club coach Bill Jones, Corbin decided to try diving last year. Because Corbin had been a gymnast for 12 years prior to high school, both Jones and Fond du Lac coach Glen McBride felt she’d excel at a sport like diving. “It all started with my very fantastic coach Bill,” Corbin said. “I was a swimmer first and he was like ‘With your gymnastics ability, why don’t you try diving?’ I did a couple lessons with him and I started going down to Walter Schroeder (Aquatic Center in Brown Deer) and said ‘This actually isn’t that bad.’ So my sophomore year, I decided to join the diving team to see how it was. I really enjoyed it and found out I was pretty good at it.”

After spending much of her youth as a gymnast, Corbin decided to give up the sport when she entered high school because she didn’t want to be overwhelmed by the prospect of 20-plus hours of practice a week. That said, after deciding to try diving, all the skills she’d developed as a gymnast helped immeasurably with her progress as a diver. “It really has helped a lot,” Corbin said. “I wouldn’t be as good as I was if it wasn’t for that. … Balance, the flipping, the twisting. I think it’s really helped. Being able to know where I am in the air.” After showing promise as a diver her sophomore season, Corbin came into 2014 with some pretty high expectations for herself, despite it being just her second full season in the sport. Notably, Corbin was hoping to qualify for state.

Mission accomplished.

“I had hopes of going to state, I didn’t actually know I’d be going to state,” Corbin said. “We all had long-term goals that we had in mind and one of the big ones that I had in mind was to go to state. So I’m pretty excited that I made it.” McBride saw the potential Corbin had last year and noted he also was expecting big things out of her in her junior season. He pointed out that she worked hard in the offseason and throughout the year to get to this point. “She showed a lot of promise in her first year,” McBride said. She worked really hard in the offseason. She took advantage of some opportunities, but it wasn’t easy because it’s not right in town here. She joined a dive team up in the Fox Valley and she also did a week at an Indiana University dive camp. You never know how it’s going to fall, but she improved as the season went along, too. From day one of the season, it seemed like she got better every week of the season.”

Because diving is a sport that is judged based on the difficulty of the attempted maneuvers, McBride noted that Corbin has the perfect mindset for it. She isn’t content to stick with easy dives that she’s good at. Corbin will try more difficult dives that, while they take more time to perfect and require a greater skill level, score much higher at competitions. “The concept of being a good diver is sort of simple,” McBride said. “You have to be athletic, like almost any sport. But you’ve got to be daring and willing to try different dives because to score well you have to have a high degree of difficulty. Maddy’s really done that a lot. She knows what it takes, so she’s not sticking with her easiest dive. … She’s got a lot of challenging dives.”

As far as this weekend, both Corbin and McBride are hoping for a decently high finish. For now, Corbin is focusing on staying calm before the biggest meet of her career. “It’s just going to be another meet and that I’m going to stay calm,” Corbin said. “You just can’t think of it as being state. You’ve got to think of it as another meet. It’s no different than if it was conference or sectionals. There’s just a couple more people.” McBride pointed out that Corbin has the mental toughness needed to excel at the state level. He noted Corbin made a mistake on a dive at sectionals, but was able to put that behind her and finish strong. That in itself is proof she has what it takes to perform well in Madison. “I feel good about it because she’s been mentally tough all year,” McBride said. “Overcoming that dive she made a mistake on in sectionals, some kids don’t overcome that and she’s been able to do that all year. I think she’s going to go down there, and it’s obviously tough competition, but I think she’ll be ready for it and I have high hopes of her moving up in the scoring.”

Fond du Lac’s Corbin heading to state

NEENAH – Fond du Lac junior Maddy Corbin is heading to the WIAA Division 1 girls state swimming & diving meet after qualifying with a fourth-place finish Friday night in the diving competition at a sectional meet hosted by Neenah.

Corbin finished with a score of 412.25, breaking the school record in the event — a record she previously set. Corbin will be seeded 19th out of 24 qualifiers at state, according to Fond du Lac coach Glen McBride. “She’s really excited,” McBride said of Corbin. “She told me early in the year ‘When’s the last time somebody made it to state?’ I said ‘Not since I’ve been coach.’ She’s the first girl that truly took to diving and said ‘I want to be the best.’”

The Division 1 state meet is next Saturday at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium in Madison. Neenah’s Hazel Hertting won the diving competition with a score of 622.90. Ashwaubenon’s Isabella Bunchek was second and Oshkosh North/Lourdes’ Lauren Neveau was third.
