2017 Girls Track Outlook

FOND DU LAC – The Fond du Lac girls track and field team has a variety of athletes back from last season’s WIAA Division 1 sectional champion squad.

Although the Cardinals lose Annie Moore, who qualified for the state meet in three events in 2016, they make up for it in a few ways.

State qualifiers Ally Gietzel (sprints, long jump), Madison Hughes (distance), Nicole Lord (sprints, long jump), Brooke McDowell (hurdles, sprints), Kiya Petik (hurdles, sprints), Katie Retzlaff (hurdles, sprints), Amber Wells (hurdles, sprints) and Liz Ziegler (distance) all return.

Ashley Arndt (hurdles), Emma Kottke (throws), Sarah Moore (high jump), Jayden Sawyer (throws), Amelia Wehner (high jump, sprints), Toni Winkler (sprints) and Emily Ziegler (sprints) are also back.

Apart from Moore, Fond du Lac loses Maddie Bahr (throws), April Britton (sprints), Abby Endries (sprints), Morgan Endries (sprints) and Miranda Zipp (hurdles) from its 2016 squad.

Fond du Lac coach Jena Walsh mentioned newcomers such as Samantha Brost (sprints, long jump), Rachel Hencke (sprints, jumps), Brandi Voight (sprints) and Jasmine Moore (throws) as being athletes she believes could step up.

With so many important contributors returning, Walsh has high expectations this year.

“The hope is to carry over our success from the 2016 season into this year’s season,” Walsh said. “We have a large number of returning athletes who have high aspirations and are ready to compete at a high level. As a team we hope to continue to be competitive at the regional and sectional meet and have as many athletes compete at the state track meet.”
